Dog First Aid Franchise Ltd is, as the name suggests, a Franchise business. But what is a Franchise and what does it mean for my customers?

The British Franchise Association (BFA) defines a Franchise as “The Granting of a licence by one person (Franchisor) to another (Franchisee), which entitles the franchisee to own and operate their business under the brand, systems and proven business model of the Franchisor”.

In our case, the founder of Dog First Aid franchised her small business in 2016; meaning she could reach more dog owners and help save more dogs across the country.

We are in great company; the Franchising model isn’t new. You will be familiar with brands such as McDonalds, Hertz Car Hire, Hilton Hotels, AnyTime Fitness, Costa Coffee and KFC who all operate Franchise Models. In our own sector we see brands like Vets4Pets, Dial-a-Dog-Wash, Oscar Pet Foods, PetStay and Barking Mad to name just a few.

In their 2018 Franchise Landscape Report NatWest and the BFA identified that franchising contributes in excess of £17bn to the UK economy and is significantly growing. Franchising provides people, increasingly women, to tap into a proven business model with support and direction whilst being able to be flexible around other commitments. Work-life balance is here to stay!

So what does that mean for the end customer?
  • Franchisees go through a training programme and are given regular support – in our case it is fair to say that training is extensive and ongoing!
  • Franchisees are contractually held to a high standard by their Franchisor – meaning that you get the best possible product and service
  • Franchisees are part of a wide support network – collaboration is key to innovating in business and keeping things fresh for customers
  • If you are dissatisfied, there is an escalation point – where do you go when the “one man band” doesn’t take your feedback or complaint seriously?
  • The product or service you are buying has already been tried and tested by thousands of other customers already
  • The franchisee is likely to experience “mystery shops” or shadowing from the Franchisor to ensure that they are delivering to a high standard and the brand is represented well
  • Dog First Aid is a member of the Approved Franchise Association – giving you an assurance of quality

All this means that you as the end customer can expect excellence – and when it comes to training you shouldn’t expect anything less.
