If you are reading this blog, I probably don't need to tell you how great it is to have a dog! But even though you already know it is amazing to have a furry friend (or 2, or 3) you may not know these facts.

Dog owners live longer

A recent study, Circulation: Cardiovascular quality and outcomes found that people who own dogs may live longer due to improved cardiovascular health. As well as being motivated to take regular exercise by walking the dog, the study also shows that people with dogs are less likely to die after release from hospital following a heart attack or a stroke.

Petting a dog can lower stress levels

According to another study, playing with or petting a dog can increase levels of the stress reducing hormone oxytocin and decrease production of the stress hormone cortisol. With this in mind, Pets as Therapy (PAT) dogs can often be found in schools where children read to them. This has been proven to reduce the child’s stress levels when reading aloud.

Dogs help to teach your kids about responsibility

When you have a dog, his needs must be met. He needs to be fed, exercised, played with, wormed, groomed, picked up after and have his healthcare needs met. Giving your children age appropriate responsibility will teach them to care for another living being. This can help to develop empathy, confidence and initiative in your child.

You are less likely to be burgled

In a study conducted by Co-op insurance in 2017, former burglars cited a barking dog as being one of the main deterrents to breaking into a home. Your pooch may be as soft as butter, but the burglars are unlikely to take that risk.

You may get better sleep

Mayo Clinic Proceedings has completed research on the effects on your pet sleeping on the bed with you. It found that sharing your bed with your dog can improve the quality of your sleep! I certainly like nothing more than having my dog shaped hot water bottle nestled in beside me.
